say you were to find the width of a piece of aluminum, and you weren't allowed to use a ruler or meter stick, how would you go about finding the measurement?

Use something with a known measurement...like a U.S. dollar bill is six inches long. Use it to get a close approximation. Folding it in half would get your three inches...etc.

Some tricks I learned in the Boy Scouts about a zillion years ago. Measurements are "more or less" - but they give a good approximation.

Bend your index finger. The space between the 1st and 2nd knuckle is about 1 inch.

Stretch out your arms wide. This is about 6 feet from the tip of one middle finger to the tip of the other.

Stretch out one arm. The distance from the tip of your nose to the tip of the middle finger is about 3 feet (1 yard).

Spread the fingers of both hands and hold them out in front of you with the thumbs touching. The distance from the end of one little finger to the other is about 12 inches (1 foot).

Spread the fingers of one hand. The distance from thumb to the end of the little finger is about 6 inches.

dial calipers are used to measure items like this. You can find them at Sears or other tool stores. This is actually a better way to measure accurately something like thickness.

you've probably heard this already, but is it possible for you to use a tape measure? It would be more efficient than using a dollar bill, but that could work to.

You could use a dollar bill to get size. Each bill is about 6 inches long, so while not perfect, you would have a solid guess.
