There is this Dutch proverb, saying:
"Wie mooi wil zijn, moet pijn lijden."
it means (literal translation): who wants to be beautifull, must suffer pain.
You can imagine what it is about?
- wearing high heels and suffering back ache from it.
- having your toes pressed together in pointy shoes
- there is a chinese fashion for women to put bandage around baby's feet, so that they will stay smaller; this is probably the most extreme thing about feet.
- in africa there are tribes that enlarger the holes in their ears, stretch their necks by adding metal rings, use dishes to enlarge their lower lips
- you probably know people that have piercings or tattoos
- what about combing long hairs? it sometimes hurts
- plastic surgery
well, etcetera etcetera. This issue has a nice social science point of view, and you can go into statistics about health effects. So the more "Beta" sciences can be in as well (biology, physics, maths) Maybe ask a doctor how many trouble people suffer are caused by themselves, because of wanting to be beautifull.
keywords: botox, liposuction, tattoo, facelift, high heels, breast enlargement (related to breast cancer?)
Good Luck!

I have a design degree from Drexel University and here's a great, fun, cheap project we did:
Create an article of clothing by recycling other items. The clothing should look first like a high fashion article of clothing, but when looked at more closely the items it is made from should be apparent. (You should be able to easily recognize what it's made of.) If you can, use no other connectors other than the properties of the recyclables themselves, by notching, slotting, or other means. You should be able to comfortably wear the item to demonstrate it without it falling off.
Have a great time with this...it was one of my favorite projects! You may be able to contact a local factory and get leftover scraps/seconds they throw away...several people made items that way. Soda cans, egg cartons, magazines, plastic bottles, paper, and fast food containers were used, as were seconds from a sneaker factory and seconds from a book binding plant. I made a gorgeous long coat entirely from disposable diapers, and although we all thought it made a great environmental statement, I was technically using something that had not been recycled. (I also cheated and added some white tape inside it to hold it together!) Good luck, and don't forget, first and foremost, the clothing should be beautiful.

You can do a project on cross dressers.....take a survey and see how many people out there actually cross dress....or you can do a project on candle or soap making. there are a few...use your imagination....be creative....think of the things that other people wont think of or be interested in and do your project on it.....you'll get a good grade Good Luck!

do a survey on 20 girls (w/ thier permission of course). Have 5 dress really nice w/ makeup and just completley beautiful, 5 dress like sluts/hookers, 5 dress normal, and 5 dress in sweatpants and just completely nerdy w/ no sense of style. do this for a month then check thier grades to see if the way you dress has anything to do w/ school performance.

why not do a survey for the best kind of fabric to wear under certain conditions (hot temp, humid, etc.)? You could test for absorption of heat, how well it insulates, stuff like that.
Then again, you could safely go with an old-fashioned volcano! :)
