I just bought a Western Digital 250gb IDE hard drive and when I plugged it in it is not being recognized. I ran the disk that came with it and it still isn't working. Also when I have it plugged it is not making any noise what so ever, not even humming. Should it be completely silent or do I have a faulty hard drive? Thanks.

Could be faulty. Let's check some other things. The red stripe on the IDE cable and the red wire on the power plug should be next to each other. If this is the only hard drive then you should hear a little noise and feel a little vibration if you are holding it. If you are using it as a secondary drive - check your jumpers. If both drives are set as CS (cable select) it should work but you can also set the original as a master and the new one as a slave. If you are using this as an external drive, make sure it is set for master.

Maybe a bad power outlet from your computer try a different outlet from your powersupply Your Harddrive could be (dead) non-operational.

good luck!
