Thank you, I so agree, ppl in the suburbs and in nice area wanna act Ghetto and I'm like ghetto isn't something people want to be-it's a hard life. And living in a mansion and driving a nice car doesn't count as begin ghetto-it takes a more than that and many ppl don't get that.

It's always been seen as 'cool' to be tough and have 'street smarts', that goes along with the whole Ghetto thing. The other side is just about the current fashion trend. People used to think bell bottoms were cool at one time, even people in the Ghetto were wearing them. A few people got together and decided to mass market the unique ghetto style and it caught on. Advertising shows that you will look 'bad as*' if you wear those clothes, as if you're showing the world that you don't take sh*t from anyone. In a world of fake people, the ghetto attitude is to show that you're 'real' etc.. It's just ridiculous when super rich suburban white kids are trying to pull it off. BUT, kids always copy the famous people they think are cool at the time.

I guess it's the same as the whole tough guy James Dean rebel thing that was popular in the 50s. Motorcycles, switchblades, tough guys. Same sh*t, different decade.

Personally, I think people think being "ghetto" is cool because they assume that it will get them somewhere in life. What I mean is, people want to have fame and be remembered in some way, so they choose to have police running after them all the time. The reason why people think ghetto is cool at all is being of all the sick things showing on tv.

The media is responsible.
TV, newspapers, music.....
Rural and suburban white people are led to believe the ghetto lifestyle is cool. They have no idea what a true ghetto is all about.
They live in the country and think that's what "city" life is
I have worked in some real ghettos, NYC, Camden, NJ, Buffalo, NY installing DirecTV and believe me it's not anything glamorous. It's one thing to see it from the sidewalk or thru your car window as you sightsee, but going into ghetto homes and seeing how life is lived is nothing to be idolizing. The filth, poverty, violence and disrespect for other human beings is horrifying.
I have a friend from a very rural town and she calls me up and says "what's up *****?" and I am offended. It's good to see that there are people out there that do not think that being"ghetto" is a compliment

The ghetto things comes from people in the ghetto trying to embrace their existence and put a positive spin on an otherwise miserable experience. People in the ghetto do not necessarily think being in the ghetto is cool but its better then looking down on yourself. With that said, the media has gotten hold of it and now you have people who have never been or lived in any ghetto acting ignorant and calling it ghetto. Not the same thing.

Hmmm... in my high school being ghetto is mainly a black guy thing and let me tell you something, they're not really looked great upon. I don't know why but it's kind of the identity blacks have chosen from where I come from (CA). While the white kids chose being preppy or emo or sk8erz, black kids chose being ghetto or gangster.
Most people do NOT think it's cool, in fact, I know some people that are afraid of them lol.

Frankly i think most of the people on this thread are as usual blowing this out of proportion and taking the opportunity to rag on people different from themselves.

Simplify people!!!

There are 2 phenomenas occurring.
One is a legitimate fashion style. Like bellbottoms or seersucker suits. Fashion is an subjective topic and in some cases made popular simply because the suburban masses don't approve.

Next is the issue of teenage males behaving tough.
Attempting to express their own Alpha - male dominance over weaker males around them. Integral behavior to mating and communication human behaviors.

Try moving out of your comfort zone once in a while and wear something different. Eventually most people discover it a liberating experience.

That was the long answer.

The short answer is - to get laid.

Because 'surviving' it to tell the story is what makes it cool. They feel like it's an inspiration to everybody else (why the rap music that goes on about the hard knock life is so popular -- people feel they can relate).

Because their friends end up in jail or pregnant too young or because they weren't able to have a car immediately at sixteen (ha), and they felt like it was them against the world. All sorts of reasons, really dealing largely with being poor & trying not to care, trying to get out without losing their identity, without betraying what brought them up.

Being 'ghetto' or thug is a way of identifying with a larger group, feeling part of a community. But the posers suck.

Good question! I don't know, perhaps they just want to be like the rap stars they see on t.v. all the time. Which is completely dumb since those people are no longer in the Ghetto if they even were in the first place... I guess the good black role models like Oprah, Condalezza Rice, and Bill Cosby don't cuss, drink, smoke dope or sing about slapping some Ho enough...

The only reason I can think of is because usually everyone in the ghetto knows each other and sometimes look out for each other. And it doesn't help that a lot of rappers glorify the Ghetto..

In the burbs where I live, most people keep to themselves.
