The ISS is going to basically be used to conduct those experiments (mostly science related) that require or give better results in microgravity or zero gravity.

1. Certain crystals grow bigger and better in space so scientists can bring them back on earth and study these bigger better ones that otherwise do not take this form on earth.
2. Microgravity affects the human and other animals' body in more ways than one, these are required to be known if we wish to travel to deep space or live on other planets (moon, mars).
3. Some observations can only be made from space like pollution in the thermosphere etc.

The results from these experiments are going to be used to benefit people around the world. They will help answer a lot of questions asked by scientists back on earth. This results in the development and use of newer and better technologies that can be used to raise our quality of life back on earth and also to help make advances in our quest of space exploration.
