Experience & Time on the job have something to do with it. I would not even say the same experience either. No TWO persons have the same experience.

It varies.

Sometimes the old notion is that the man has a family to take care of, but women workers are merely supplementing their husband's salary, so it wasn't as necessary. This is the oldest justification.

The next most commonly used was that women got sick more often or had to leave to take care of kids (school troubles, illness, etc.). There is some merit to this idea, but men also get drunk or call in sick to go hunting or fishing.

The next, but with tremendous merit, is that men tend to be more assertive about their pay. I know many women who make more than their male peers and they do that by working harder then with a lot of brass they aggressively make that clear to their bosses when asking for more money. Those that don't, don't make as much, male or female.

Sadly, because we have not come as far as we like to think regarding discrimination of any kind. It is getting better, and there are some companies that pay women the same as men, but they are not as common.
