Certainly fans should take a stand against emo-pop (a term I use a lot to describe sappy pop music). I also absolutely hate Coldplay and can't see the point.
Certainly much of their music is souless and depressing. They often stick to love songs about heartbreak without really trying to say anything at all.
Their musical ability is also doubtable- I looked at a piece of Coldplay piano music and I could probably play it (and my knowledge of piano is microscopically small). They rely on heavy beats and repetitive rhythms to speed a piece up. This results in pieces of music which sound too alike and too flat.
It could be said that the only reason that people buy such stuff is because for too long the music industry has offered nothing else. The anger towards such bands only comes about because then the singers (Chris Martin is a good example) then become caricatures of themselves and become too detached from their music.
I must also add that I would rather listen to a real guitar band like Joy Division, who actually have some substance to their music.

The music world needs variety. Imagine if the only thing we had access to was boy bands or folk music. Bands like Coldplay and Snow Patrol fill a void for people that are into that sort of music.

I can see your point on this one. I haven't got a tremendous amount of time for Snow Patrol and used to like Coldplay up to X & Y which is pretty bland and samey to me.

It's not something i particularly choose to listen to much, but there are far more annoying things out there to really get my goat (most r&b, naff trance stuff, cheesy pop for kids, i could go on) that seem to be manufactured by some soulless git (eg. Cowell, Walsh etc) purely to hear cash registers go kerching!

While you mightn't like Cold-Patrol (or even worse Athlete uugghh!!!) at least they come up with their own tunes, play them and weren't manufactured on saturday night telly.

Neither are they as blusteringly dull and triumphal as major key snore merchants like Oasis and U2 who sell even more records and make me even angrier.

Enjoy the music you do love and ignore what p**ses you off it's gives you less stress.

I don't think it's necessarily worth getting angry about. I just choose not to listen to that music and I don't really care how many albums they sell. It's just representative of the fact that everyone's taste in music is different. I personally also prefer music that's either a bit harder, different genre or has a bit more substance. It doesn't bother me that music that I don't particularly like sells well, I know that I don't have to buy it.

No! Music is not about right or wrong its about honesty and when Chris Martin writes a song and it comes out a bit lightweight for you, it just means that yours and his musical tastes vary. It would be a pretty sad world if every song sounded like my chemical romance! Don`t get me wrong I like them but I think you need variety of music otherwise your mum and dad would be stealing your slipknot albums all the time!

Well, I agree with you that they are lightweights and lame. In fact, I couldn't even tell you what they sing. It all sounds the same. But, I don't waste my hate on this music. I just ignore it and listen more to the music I like.

Snow Patrol's "Final Straw" wasn't too bad but I don't like their last record. I don't know why, but it just doesn't do it for me.

Coldplay has only had a few good songs, but they're not that good.

Every Coldplay song sounds exactly the same, but I did like them when they first started out, they just keep doing the same thing. Yawn!! They need more originality!
