Well, Matrix, Supergirl, was from a pocket dimension in which Superboy, not the Superman we knew, had vanished or died. The Luthor of that world created Matrix to be Supergirl to fight Zod and his friends. She got our Superman to help and won, but she was beaten badly. After a long storyline of her being somewhat brain damaged and thinking she was the real Superman, she returned as Supergirl and had a thing with our Luthor. After learning he was truly one of the bad guys, she left him and had a brief run with the Titans. She had merged herself with a woman named Linda Danvers to save her life and became one. After this fusion, she learned the original Supergirl, the one before Crisis on Multiple Earths, was to die. She went back in time, took her place, and eventually married Superman. However, to save the life of her daughter, Matrix had to allow Kara to resume her proper place in the timestream and lost everything as the price.
During a galactic battle with Imperilex, I believe that is how it is spelled, time is restarted and Matrix is forgotten in the Superman lineup.

She got killed in the original continuity. After that they pretty much just ignored her. Check in WIKI they have a full synopsis.
