I have a lot of favorite breeds, but they are favorites for different reasons.
I love the QH because of temperament and work ethic
I love Arabians because they are smart, can go forever and are beautiful
I love mustangs for their wild spirit
I love Tennessee Walkers and Missouri Foxtrotters for their gaits.
I think my favorite above anything is an arabian cross because they bring the stamina, character and intelligence of the arabian breed without the hot headedness.
I have an arabian-andalusian cross who is smart, has a good work ethic, will try with all her heart, can travel forever without being dehydrated and exhausted, is well gaited for long distances and she thinks for herself, without questionning me too much.

It really depends. If you want to get into rodeo sports you want to go for a more stocky breed, like Appaloosa, Quarter Horse, Paints, Mustangs. Halter classes you also want stockier breeds. I'm not so sure on english, but I'm pretty sure for jumping, hunter, even dressage you want to get a nice warmblood.
Although the stocky breeds are used for english, quarters and paints usually have a harder time getting the right floaty gait that say, a thoroughbred can get. Also it's hard for fast breeds, like the thoroughbred/arabian, to slow down for some western classes.
Then again, pretty much any horse can be trained for any discipline, although they may not be much good at it!!

it depends on your situation. If you're going to be showing a lot, a thoroughbred would be good for you. If you just want a nice horse that you can ride whenever, a crossbreed or a quarter horse would be good. At least for me, I like any horse I can get a hold of.

It depends on what you want and do with your horse as to the best breed. It is an individual choice and very much a personal preference.
I ride a Thoroughtbred and always will have at least one in my barn.
I love the spirit in them and the determination they have.

What are you trying to do with the horse? Cutting horses are good at cutting. Havanovarian (sp?) horses make good jumping horses, thoroughbreds make good racing horses, Clydesdales make good wagon pullers, and so on.
