Hattie McDaniel is my personal favorite. She started out as a singer, and made her film debut in 1931. Most people remember her in the role of Mammy from Gone with the Wind. What most people don't realize, however, is that when she won an oscar for the role, she was the first African-American to ever win an oscar. She started out as a singer, and made her film debut in 1931. She was on radio, tv, and in movies...she appeared in over 300 films. I think she was truly talented and overcame much adversity.
