if your looking for a snake, i'd reccomend a corn snake or a ball python. corn snakes eat smaller mice, but you should see the size of rats that some ball pythons eat.
if your looking for a lizard/gecko, id reccomend a leopard gecko. they eat crickets, which isn't as bad as mice in case your parents are skeeved by them. leopard geckos come in many colors, and love to be handled, especially because of the warmth of your hand.

Corn snakes are pretty easy, but it depends somewhat on what kind of pet you're looking for. In general, I think that smaller snakes are easier than lizards. Corn snakes are a great starter snakes. They don't have many exotic requirements, they tend to be very tame and easily handled, they come in many different colors, and they don't get very large. If you're interested in lizards, bearded dragons are probably one of the easiest in that department. But, as a snake fan, I have to say, go with the corn snake. :)

Corn snakes are great-Iguana's are terrible starter reptiles unless you are prepared to start with a lizard that is going to get 5 feet long. A corn snake will still be a manageable size at adulthood, which means he/she won't end up at a rescue when he gets too big.

Through my experience I would say corn snakes are the easiest. They tend to be great eaters. Garbage cans if you will. Ours was around to eat the left overs of the picky ball pythons. We have 11 snakes and it can get expensive to just throw out the mice. May as well feed to something that is always hungry.
Don't get me wrong ball pythons are relatively easy as well. But, like I said they are picky and this can be a hassle sometimes.

you have a spectacular-sized tank for a snake around the dimensions you choose. No 3 to 4 foot snake will pose a risk to a rabbit or a puppy. Your puppy, notwithstanding, WILL pose a risk on your snake. i opt to advise you verify there's no way it could stave in appropriate on the tank and get to the snake, and verify the dogs is close out of the room once you have the snake out. dogs are predators--on no account ignore that. As for the snake biting you once you cope with the rabbit...properly, that's obtainable. the answer is easy--wash your palms till now you cope with your snake (and in a while)--each and every time. that's a competent thought in any case. Do you have a thermostat to regulate that warmth pad? They require one (examine the packaging). No snakes LIKE being dealt with. some species will oftentimes stay calm and tolerate it greater efficient than others. notwithstanding, reptiles are all persons, and a few persons could have undesirable temperments, even in frequently docile species. keep that for the period of recommendations too--you will ought to stay with your snake as quickly as you deliver it abode, whether it has a undesirable attitude, and does not opt to be touched. Corn snakes and ball pythons are between the final snakes for novices. Corns are greater energetic and flighty. Ball pythons could properly be somewhat shy--the feeding issues stated are somewhat overstressed--maximum ball pythons will consume devoid of real subject, even with the indisputable fact that all could now and returned refuse a meal right here and there. Ball pythons are sluggish-shifting, and not very energetic, so they only must be fed as quickly as each and every 2 weeks whilst they are totally grown (and a smaller merchandise than many different snakes). maximum can study to settle for frozen/thawed rats. particular, a number of them are obdurate approximately it, and confusing to alter from stay, yet once you're taking it in steps, (initiate with greatly surprised, circulate to pre-killed, fragrance a f/t rat with stay rat bedding, and so on), then you definitely can win even them over ultimately. now and returned corn snakes could properly be confusing to alter over too--they are persons. It relatively relies upon on what you choose--an energetic, alert, relatively speedy snake, or a sluggish-shifting snake that doesn't circulate plenty?
