The "frame" for the story is a series of letters written by the man who picked up Dr Frankenstein near the North Pole. The first one is dated "Dec. 11th, 17--".
But after 1791, because Felix instructed Safie from Volney's Ruins of Empire, which was published in 1791.
It ended in 1797, because there is a reference to "last Monday, July 31" and 1797 was the only year between 1791-99 in which July 31 fell on a Monday.
Am I the only one who understood the question, or the only one who didn't?

"Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is an 1818 novel by Mary Shelley, first published anonymously in London, but more often known by the revised third edition of 1831 under her own name." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankenstein

The story was originally conceived when Mary Shelley, her husband Percy Bysche Shelly, and a few other friends (I think Byron may have been there too) started telling ghosts stories while vacationing at a castle in Switzerland.
There is an amazing movie called "Gothic" ( http://www.feoamante.com/Movies/GHI/gothic.html ) that tells the story of how this story was written.

Ilich is correct. 1818. You should award 10 points to him, because he deserves them. The story is, "What does it mean to live? What does it mean to be alive or dead?" Also, the story was written by Mary Shelley who was with her husband Percy Bysshe Sheeley in a Swiss something.

Being a Gothic Novel, the time setting must have been in the 18th or the 19th century.
