Simply just be using a chat site you should be safe, however when using an interent application you must (should) have an active anti-virus and firewall running.

Never accept an dowload or link from someone you don't trust or if you don't know what the download will do. Scan all hyperlinks and files with an active anti - virus.

I have heard that if you have an open port to that person, like a web cam or mic that some hackers can send you viruses or hack you, never use a web cam with someone you don't trust and be suspicious of those that show you their cam and all you see is a blank wall or the back of a chair etc. I have no definite proof of this but it is strongly rumored that this is possible
