Last year I saw a make-up line made specifically for black women. All the colors that look good on dark skin. I dont remember the name but I saw it at Walgreens so it must be reasonibily priced. Good luck.

It really depends on your complexion. Lighter skinned African-Americans can get away with a few of the drug store brands, but as a rule, darker tones should get good foundation. And for the record, MK is considered a mid-level brand, not expensive.
As a makeup artist, I would cheat and sometimes buy cheap drugstore foundations (not often, though. You get what you pay for!) if I knew I would be working with a Jessica Alba toned girl.
But when I had darker women, I always bought Bobbi Brown or Chanel. MAC is good for dark completions also. The problem is, it's actually more expensive to get the ingredients for the darker colors in a cosmetic line, however a line cannot charge more for the brown foundations, so they cut corners and put junk in it that turns dark skin ashy grey by mid-afternooon.
That's why "expensive" brands cost more. You will look better in the long run.

I am not of african american desent but i must say that my friends who are love AVON products. THey seem to be gentle on the skin and easy on the wallet. In the begining AVON wasnt quite geered toward the black woman population but it has slowly been changing throughout the years. You can easily find a representitive in your area through the internet or local ads in the paper. I also prefer covergirl and that is what Americas next top model uses all the time on their girls. I am sure you will be beautiful no matter what you pick. Sometimes accenting the eyes makes a huge difference no matter what you skin is like. That and just a simple lipgloss. Being healthy and drinking water will also give your skin a healthy glow.

This is sorta going to be a really bad explanation because I don't know what the name of it is and I'm pasty white. But There's a product made by maybelline. It's like this cream stuff and my mom and I use the same color (she's got olive skin and mine is like WHIIITE) and it works well with both. I know it comes in darker colors too. But with that stuff you have to be careful. Less is more, it covers really well and the less you use at a time the better it blends. OH I think it's called Dream Mousse. It also comes in Rouge colors, which are gorgeous, but once again less is more.

CoverGirl makeup is great for black women and you can get it in any drugstore. Try the "Queen" line by Queen Latifah, my clients love it.
