It would be better to say that penguins live in the southern hemisphere rather than the south pole. There are some species that are found round the edge of the Antarctic continent but there are none near the south pole. More penguins are found on the coasts of Africa, Australia and South America and on most of the islands south of about 40°S. One species is found on the equator in the Galapagos islands.

Polar bears have a far more limited range. They are creatures of the sea ice and pack ice, coming to land only when the ice melts and to breed. While you will never see a penguin at the south pole, you could see a polar bear at the north pole as the north pole is in the middle of the Arctic ocean.

Penguins live in Antarctica, Galapagos, New Zealand and some other isolated areas, while polar bears live in the northern Arctic region such as Alaska.
