Look it up in Wikipedia. But I can tell you this...A person that cuts themselves is not Emo, and this is something that has become so associated with Emo people that it's down right disgusting, the main reason, because a lot of kids think if they cut themselves it will make them look cool and tough...this is very wrong. A person who cuts generally has an underlying problem, it's not from a label or a certain genre of music, it's because of a genetic disorder passed down through their genes, nothing they can control except through medication. Please don't confuse the two. The Emo kids you see nowadays can be considered dark and very emotional, but as was said by someone else...it's just a label and most of these kids are doing it to fit in, even though Emo isn't a very accepted label among most peers. I used to know some Emo kids. They labeled themselves as such because they liked the music, none of them were really depressed at all, but for the most part they wore polo and band t-shirts with medium wash jeans, not black on black with some red like so many people today think. Those are the confused fake Emos. And really...aren't we all just people? We all have the same features...so why confuse ourselves with a label?
Although Emos are generally more depressed...what you see today are kids not really depressed but confused because they are still finding out who they are. This can be easily fixed with taking a good look at yourself from the inside and finding who you are as a person and what you want to do in life. A person that is clinically depressed cannot help their illness and they should not be looked down upon.

Emo is a slang term used to describe a range of fashion styles and attitudes somewhat affiliated with emo music and its related scene. As an adjective, emo can describe a style of fashion or music; or a general state of unhappiness or melancholy (as in to "feel emo"). Emo is also used as a noun, often pejoratively, to identify a member of the "emo scene" or someone viewed as fitting the "emo" stereotype. The average emo has a gelled hairstyle which covers one eye. Many refer to this as the backwards mullet.
The term "emo" has also been used in recent years on the Internet as a form of insult, especially toward those who appear emotionally unstable, or those who talk about issues in their personal lives to people in public forums or chat rooms.
Similar to popular profanity, it tends to be used as a general insult even when it is not directly applicable. Phrases such as "cheer up, emo kid" are used frequently as a quick brush-off in this context. Some people use the term "emo" to describe a feeling of depression, alluding to the association of depression with the "emo" subculture. As a result, individual definitions of emo vary greatly, and consensus on a single definition is difficult if not impossible.
In its original incarnation, the term emo was used to describe the music of the mid-1980s Washington, DC scene and its associated bands. In later years, the term emocore, short for "emotional hardcore", was also used to describe the DC scene and some of the regional scenes that spawned from it. The term emo was derived from the fact that, on occasion, members of a band would become spontaneously and strongly emotional during performances. The most recognizable names of the period included Rites of Spring, Embrace, One Last Wish, Beefeater, Gray Matter, Fire Party, and, slightly later, Moss Icon. The first wave of emo began to fade after the breakups of most of the involved bands in the early 1990s.

emo is a label for teens who have a specific type of hair cut and clothing style. it used to be an abbreviation for emo music (emotional music) but it no longer has anything to do with music.

The label of a person who listens to a certain kind of music. The stereotype is they dress in black, listen to "dark" music, and slit their wrists.
It's just a label though.
