Hello.
Just came back from Borneo.
You need to stay in Kota Kinabalu as it's gots some lovely hotels.
I stayed at the Sutera Harbour resort which is lovely and quite quiet which is great.
Sandakan is where the animal sanctuary is. It's a flight away from Kota but mega cheap and can be done in the day.
It's true there is a orangutan at the Shangri La Rasa Ria resort but the area itself isn't up to much. It's more of a zoo style rather than in it's own environment so it doesn give you the experience you want. Also the hotel isn't that great. As it neigbours a small piece of greenary (where the orangutan is) it has lots of mosquitos and creepy crawlies. The other hotels don't have this problem.
I visited the area as a travel agent with the tourist board so I got to visit most of the hotel in the area and I definately rate the Sutera Harbour resort over any other. It's split into two hotels Magellan and Pacific. The pacific hotel is a high rise building more suited to business men. The magellan is a tourist hotel. It's amazing. The lobby is a huge open air tiki style building.
Wish I was back!!!!

Hi.
Borneo covers Malaysia, Brunei & Indonesia.

You should go to Sabah in Malaysia.
How to go there?
Take a flight direct to Kota Kinabalu.

There's an Orang Utan Santuary in Sepilok in Sandakan Sabah State.
This is the most famous ones compared to the others.

I also recommended once u are there take a short trip to Mount Kinabalu as well.

Good Luck..

Sepilok is near to Sandakan in Sabah.
It is accessed via Kota Kinabalu.
Ignore the rubbish about never having seen white people, Kota Kinabalu, formerly Jesselton, was the capital of the former colony of North Borneo and has long association with europeans.
Sepilok is well worth a visit and there are decent hotels in Sandakan.

Well yea, Sepilok is the place for Orang-Utans, but the only place to stay in Borneo has to be Kota Kinabalu. Quality place, spent a month there, years ago like, proabably all changed now, most of the people we met out there had never seen white people before, I'm sure it's common place now init

...The one specially dedicated to the Orangutan is the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary in Sandakan , on the east coast of Sabah. If you want to work/study these primates..you can contact the Wildlife Department of the Sabah State at http:/www.sabah.gov.my/jhl . If you're a student...then have your professor write you a referal...good luck

Sepilok in Sandakan would be the best choice but there's a hotel in Kota Kinabalu - Rasaria which have a small Orang Utan Santuary too.

The best one (in my opinion) is the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary in Sabah.

I don't know much about Sabah / Sarawak. But maybe you can contact the WWF (wildlife foundation) and maybe they could give you more info.
