When someone with a mental illness is in acute distress and needs assistance. Someone in this condition should go to the local emergency room for a mental health evaluation if they can't be seen by their doctor immediately. A crisis can happen for many reasons. Someone's medications isn't working, they had a psychotic break, something traumatic happened and triggered the crisis, etc.

Their job is to give assistance to emotionally disturbed persons.
To prevent development of more serious psychiatric disorders by early identification of, and intervention in,potentially hazardous emotional crisis
To offer alternatives to institutionalization and involuntary commitment by providing less costly and less disruptive treatment or, when necessary, voluntary hospitalizations.
To provide services which are immediate, accessible, and acceptable. The Acute Psychiatric Services centers are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with phone and outreach services.

An acute psychiatric crisis is a situation in which a person is severely mentally unstable. One example of an acute psychiatric crisis is when someone with Bipolar or Schizophrenia is having delusions or hallucinations. Another would be if a person is depressed or extremely anxious and cannot function properly because of emotional stress brought on by the disease or a traumatic event. A third would be if a person is so confused or angry that they are a danger to themselves or others. Basically, anytime a person with a mental disorder (or their doctor) feels that they are in an emergency situation (whether it is real or imagined) and requires immediate assistance, counseling, medication, or hospitalization.

Generally, this means that a person is danger to him/herself or others (e.g., threatening suicide, murder, or harm to another). This could also refer, in the case of schizophrenia for example, to dangerous levels of delusional thinking, hallucinations, etc. Another example: A person with an eating disorder like anorexia nervosa could be considered to have an acute psychiatric crisis if he or she is in danger of dying from starvation.

It is when a person with Mental health problems is considered to be a danger to themselves or others.

Its like having a life threatening illness but instead of a physical injury or condition its a mental health condition.

It basically means that immediate intervention is required.

I believe it is when all psychiatric doctors and nurses are on strike, or when there are not enough available, or when far too many patients are being given tablets instead of therapy
