You best get a repair manual from a local parts store. The correct procedure will be in it. The book will also tell you if you need any special tools to remove parts. It's only about $20. Any time timing belts are replaced, timing is VERY important, so don't guess.

well you could just get a new belt after you take the front of the motor off. If you have a timing gun, use it! it will save you sooo much time. Or you could just put the new belt on, make sure you line up the Notches (on the ranger I think they may be dots) at the 12 o'clock position. slap the new belt on. (I use the metal chain) but if your Ranger has the Mazda Transmission (the manual) you have to use a standard belt. After that, start the truck up. If you have the timing gun use it to make sure it's tuned. Otherwise you'll have to do it by hand. (picking up the distributor, moving it like 1/8 of a turn and dropping it back down until you get a smooth idle) if you have a carb, you can adjust the jets until you get it smooth, but if you don't know what the smooth idle sounds like, buy the timing gun.

Go to www.autozone.com. They have repair info with photos and instructions. Yes, you will be setting mechanical timing marks. Its not a hard job, it will take you about 4 hours.
