It is not dumb. It is a mystery isn't it?. Not all women lose the plug before active labor, you may lose it and not even notice if it is during labor. Sometimes it comes out in little chunks. Sometimes you go to the bathroom and a BIG glob of brownish snotty looking goop POPS out. It can be a little scary because of the size.

I have never lost mine on my own, so I don't know that you should listen to me :) That said, I've heard my friends describe it as a large wad of mucus, I imagine to be like when you ovulate, maybe more solid though. Many have said they lost it when going to the bathroom and heard a splash. It is the protective mucus that keeps the cervix closed and if it comes out, it means that you have started dilating. Hopefully someone else can give you a better answer.

You may not feel it when it happens, but when you go to use the rest room afterwards you'll see a big glob of goo on your panties, usually yellowish with blood tinges in it. Some say it's pink too. If it's ever Bright bright red and there is more bright red when you wipe get to the maternity ward NOW. Otherwise if it's clear, cloudy, little bloody, just not bright red... you're good to go in labour anytime soon. Do not make plans to go away for the weekend hehe.

Well you can loose it all at once, it like a nasty clump of snot.

You can loose it in peices where it is like a slimy mess when you wipe.

Or you can loose in while your actually in labor and not even know it.

But the point of it is just to say I am getting ready for labor. It doesn't mean it can be that day but it just says I'm getting ready.

I never lost mine, or at least i never noticed it, but the nurses always told me to check for a glob of mucus tinged with blood (just pink or streaky) in the toilet paper or underwear, though sometimes it just goes in the toilet. i was glad i missed it.

Either a big chunk, or a few pieces here and there, of this nasty yellowy-clear snot looking stuff ends up on your toilet paper or in your undies. Often, but not always, there is pinkness or blood streaks in it.

It looks like big chunks of white snot coming out of you. When it is almost all out, you get what is called a bloody show--pink tint to the mucous. It is a sign that you are near delivery and that your cervix and uterus are getting prepared.

A GLOBE OF BLOOD TINGED MUCUS COMES OUT WHEN YOU WIPE IF YOU ARE USING THE RR OR IT COMES OUT IN YOUR UNDIES IF YOU ARE NOT.

YOU WILL KNOW IT IS YOUR PLUG BECAUSE IT IS QUITE A BIT AND IT IS TINGED WITH PINKISHE/RED BLOOD.

You may not even notice it. With my first I saw it but with the second I never noticed when it came out.
