If it's on the radio it's probably bad music.

90% of it is pre-determined by the record companies.

Popular does not equal good. Do yourself a favor and listen to a band or artist you've never heard of today.

I'll second that!

I live in Austin, the "live music capital of the world". Up until recently we have had some excellent radio as well. I mostly listen in the mornings on the way to work. That time was once filled with excellent interviews and in studio performances with local artests and a flavor of music that is pretty hard to describe (once again, heavy on the local artist side that leaned towards that Austin folk/blues sound).

I'm not sure what happened, but suddenly all of the morning programs kind of turned to crap. I haven't heard a good interview or live performance in a very long time. Instead we have one guy who speeks with a very annoying phony voice that makes him sound like a reject from an AM top 40 station and his music selection seems to hit all around what I want to hear but never quite lands a bulls eye. We have a couple of guys that are the staple "cool local character" morning DJs, but they do nothing but ramble on about seemingly random BS that I really don't care to listen to. And then there is a newer "retro" station that is pretty cool, but who can listen to Jefferson Starship and Pink Floyd every morning. Most everything else is the general fair of pop 40 bs, Tejano music, and, of course classical (which I happen to enjoy, just not in the morning). At least the university sponsored station has a segment called "Blues at Sunrise" on Wednesday morning where they play some excellent old school blues each week.

Anyway, enought of this rant..... In short, I totally agree with you.

Sort of off subject but an interesting thought nonetheless...

Radio/MTV/VH1 have all given up. They know they lost the battle for the music lovers. Music lovers will spend money on iPods to hear what they want to hear. Music lovers will spend the time searching the internet for a new band or pay for satellite radio. They know they cannot compete with what is available for people that need to know. So what does radio or MTV do, they shoot for the lowest common demoninator. The mindless, who will love whatever new Fergie song and will want to hear just that one song 45 times an hour so they can sing along to it. This further pushes people who want to hear new music further out of the picture.

Instead of 'If you don't like 'em, join 'em' it's 'If you don't like 'em, abandon them and try to keep what you have.'

I only listen to oldies, Country and classic rock stations, thus avoiding the indigestible noise created by most other stations.
