I wouldn't mind driving to san jose, berkeley, oakland, walnut creek, etc... Any good museums or sights? It's a bit cold for the beach!

Parking is a bit of a headache in Berkeley, so you may be better off taking the BART. Walking around on the Berkeley campus is nice and relaxing. Going up to the top of the Campanile (the clock tower in the center of campus, $1 admission) offers breathtaking views of San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. You might also enjoying looking at the resident T. rex Osborn in the Valley Life Sciences Building. There are also several museums on campus. Shopping on Telegraph Avenue can be exciting or scary depending on the day and time (and the type of person you are). If you need help or directions, just grab a student and ask.

Well, the Exploratoreum is one of my favorite places...The best hands-on science museum EVER. And, since it's right in the city, you don't even have to drive anywhere!

Pier 39 in SF is also fun...It has the aquarium you can walk underneath...You don't say how old your kids are, but Alcatraz is always fun...and a good lesson for your kids to remember that they should follow the rules! The ferry ride over would be a bit chilly, but it's pretty short.

There's also the Children's Discovery Museum in San Jose, which is a ton of fun. Oakland and San Francisco both have good zoos. And Kelley Park in San Jose has a great area for kids called Happy Hollow...it has kids play equipment (not your standard playground) as well as a petting zoo. Some of my best childhood memories are of "steering" the steamboat!

Be warned riding a cable car has become very expensive. Fare is $5 for adults one way! If you are staying for several days in the city and using public transporation a lot spring for a multi day Muni Passport which is good on all transporation not just the cable cars.

In additon to Golden Gate Park and the Exporatorium previously mentioned,

Yerba Buena Gardens has a childrens museum called Zeum, an Ice skating rink and carosel.

Randel Museum is a small natural history musuem for kids and it is free.

The other natural history musuem is the California Accadamy of Sciences at 875 Howard

The Zoo is cool too

And for something completely different go to the Brown Bear Factory at 44 Deharo where the kids can make there very own teddy bear to take home

There are the cable cars but they can get expensive. There is Peir 39, but you would have to dress warm. Maybe Alcatraz, but you will have to a boat to get there. There is walking the Golden Gate Bridge.

In San Jose, there is the Children's Discovery Museum, there is also the Tech Museum. There is an Egyptian Museum as well but I have never been there myself so I don't know what it entails.

Try downtown San Francisco Pier 39 Fisherman's Wharf. That is a great spot for families. They got a Wax Museum & Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum. You can walk around go shopping, eat ice cream, lot's of places to eat, good food, oh and the Clam Chowder Bread Bowl at Pier 39 is really yummy!

go to the Exploratorium. That was the most fun place I ever went as a kid. Tons of fun hands on science stuff.

Depending on how old the kids are, the Egyptian Museum in San Jose is also fun. I went there in 5th or 6th grade and loved it.

Th Tactile dome, Aquarium, or maybe Peir 39 and Fishermans Wharf are nice places. Sidewalk cafe's with fresh crab boils and seafodd right on the Bay. Also Ripleys believe it or not and wax museum and street artists all right there in the same area.

I love Golden Gate Park - they have a fun carousel for cheap...I think it's near the middle of the park.

Fisherman's Wharf in the city is great, but dress warm for sure. Fun toy stores, great food, etc.
