I have hired the hall and am expecting about 80-100 people to attend an event in aid of a local cancer charity. I was going to arrange a bingo and quiz night with a fish and chip supper but has anyone got any better ideas? The average age of people attending is 50 to 55. The event is not until next February (2008!) but want it to be a great evening and plan it well in advance!

You could go for a variety performance- lots of little acts, like a band, a magician, a poet, maybe some dancers or martial artists (?), just as many different things as you can think of to catch peoples attention... try to involve people from local clubs, maybe some students from a local school or university, get them to work for cheap as it's a charity gig... and get someone to come from the cancer charity to speak about the work they do, and maybe if you can find some cheap foods that have anti-cancer properties you could serve them? I mean, you could still have a quiz and/or Bing, make that part of the entertainment too.

I raised quite a lot using dry creamcrackers. All you do is get people to try and eat three dry crackers without a drink of water. The first one dries out your mouth, the second takes the last of the moisture out and you cannot swallow and the third is a no go. I offered a prize of £50 and no one won. you just cannot do it its impossible. Try it!!!!

How about a Monte Carlo night(gambling). Almost everyone like a chance to win something. I would also sell chances at the door and also in advance(winner need not be present) for a 50/50 CASH raffle. Could get local print shop to prob print tickets for free or next to nothing if you approach them with the charity idea. ALSO, local business WILL donate prizes for raffle if asked on a letterhead from your organization. I volunteer at a firehall(Ladies Auxiliary) and we attend our local Community Days and sell food(gyros) and sell chances and all the local businesses give us stuff for free to raffle off for free to those in attendance. They give stuff like mugs, T-shirts, etc. It promotes advertising for them too. PLUS, CONTACT LOCAL RADIO STATION NOW and ask for CONCERT tickets that you may raffle off. We always get some from our local stations for decent concerts and we can raffle them off and make a good bit of CLEAR profit. MAKE SURE that the concert is about 6 months away or longer.(They will have a list of things for next yr. allready) to give you time to print and sell chances on it.
Another thing we have done to raise money is a calendar that plays on the daily lottery. This requires a LOT of work and selling though, but you can make as much as $10,000 or more if done right. These MUST be sold a yr. in advance though, but it's a thought for future reference. If you would like more info on this contact me at doconner5505@comcast.net. TOO lengthy to go into here on how it works.
If you or someone you know is good at putting "Baskets" together you could have a couple of them to raffle off too. Can display them previous to the engagement somewhere like a local small store and ask them if they will help by selling chances for you. Each "basket " will have a different theme to it. One idea would be your sports team. In the basket you could have stuff like mugs, blanket, etc. with their logo on it. Possibly some tickets from the team you are doing the basket about(also get donated)..
Another basket could be a pasta basket. Different kinds of sauces and pastas. A pot to cook the pasta in, etc. whatever you can think of that would go with pasta. Maybe checkered napkin set, grated cheese, etc.
Another basket would be to pamper yourself(Ladies usually) with bubble bath, lotions, etc.
Could do a Thanksgiving basket with a gift certificate for a turkey from a local store, cran sauce, stuffing mix, etc. ALL the trimmings.
Basket of CHEER always goes well. ALL types of booze(liquor) plus a case of beer.
Set ticket prices according to contents of basket. Usually around $5 per or slightly less or more, depends like I said, on contents.
