The 1080 is lines of vertical resolution, the p stands for progressive scan and the i stands for interlaced. Progressive scan means the TV draws every line in order every time a picture is made on the TV. Interlaced means that the TV draws every other line and uses the next pass down the screen to fill in the blanks. Progressive scan provides a better picture when used on a TV that supports it. If you don't have an HDTV that'll do 1080p then it won't make a difference to you.

Just a note in regards to what the answerer after me mentioned, 1080i still draws 1080 vertical lines of resolution, it just does them in a different order. 1080i draws 540 lines (every other line) of a frame 60 times a second, so you get a full picture 30 times a second. 1080p draws the whole 1080 lines every time, but only 30 times per second (but still refreshed 60 times per second!). 1080i is not equivalent to 540p by any means.

1080p is a format that the picture is scanned you get 1080 pixels (p) from top to bottom which is the clearest image available right now
1080i is the other format it means interlaced lines (i) basically it means that every other line is scanned and sent to the TV so in the out come you are seeing roughly 1/2 the lines (540) the more lines the better

Geoff and the guy after him are both correct, you wont really notice the difference between 1080P and 1080I unless you have a big screen television anyway.

Although I do not know the specs, 1080p is a much clearer picture than 1080i
