The Joshua Tree album was when they were at their peak.

The first 3 albums - Boy-October-War - were the best in my opinion. There was NOTHING at the time that was as musically original or lyrically inspiring. Under a Blood Red Sky was, at the time, the best live album I'd ever heard. I like the Unforgettable Fire too, but after that I really lost interest in the band. I still don't think they've done anything as original or enticing as their first 3...
I got to see them live 3 different times "back in the day" (pre- Rattle & Hum) and they were mesmerizing. Now they just seem formulaic and bored.

the unforgettable fire/the joshua tree album and all the history that led up to them making the achtung baby album. The period where they were making the Joshua Tree was very interesting, how they were getting into american roots music and some blues and stuff. but the period afterward really gained them my utmost respect. They've begun to have some musical differences and some other disagreements, and were on the verge of breaking up, but they realized that their friendship came first, and not U2, so they remained loyal to eachother and pulled through with the writing of the song "one", and U2 was reborn again.

Unforgettable Fire- band was on the way up.(just like REM's Life's Rich Pageant or Document) Once Joshua hit, you got the teeny boppers listening.
