Well, sure. The minimum wage mostly affects the young and female. I always marveled how young men can find better entry level paying jobs in the trades, and because they can lift more than women.

Raising the minimum wage will place the burden upon businesses, especially small (American Dream) companies. Small companies employ the most workers and move the US economy.

Businesses want tax breaks, and I hope they get them. Otherwise the standard of living will soar.

Who do you think will be paying for this wage increase? It certainly won't be big corporations because they already pay higher than the minimum wage. The ones that are working for minimum are students, some elderly, immigrants, and the uneducated. Small businesses will have to raise prices, shorten hours worked, or lay off personnel. There also will be a new breed of worker applying for jobs the above mentioned now do, so there will be less opportunity for them. Above all, why would you want to work for a minimum wage in the first place?

Do you think "they" should raise it only the measly two dollars per hour being proposed? If two bucks is a good thing then why not $4 or $5? Let's raise it to $10 per hour if raising it is a good thing to do. Even there the annual wage would only be $20,000 per year - not much when you think about it. Then why not raise it to $20 or $30 per hour and really make it significant. Do you think that if the minimum wage were $30 per hour that no one would live in poverty anymore?

I have one last question for you: Very few economists think raising the minimum wage is a good thing. Some who oppose it have won the Nobel Prize in Economics. Do you think they might possibly know something that you don't know or do you think they are simply heartless?

Yes. The arguments against it are fatuous. To say that jobs will be lost is to suggest that most employers hire many more people than they need in order to operate, or that their goods and services will be undesirable if more people have more purchasing power. To say that "most minimum wage earners live with their families," is to say that families are supposed to subsidize the companies for which their members work. Those who argue for "free market" aren't arguing for a true free market unless they also support eliminating patent and copyright protections. People work better when they have the self-confidence of being paid what they are actually worth. Business would actually benefit from paying a decent, living wage. Many slaves in the early colonies enjoyed more security than a person trying to live on today's minimum wage.

no...raising the minimum wage...if any of you took a swap through a book of economics. causes more problems. You left the market find the right price. Otherwise, you just get a shortage of jobs and then you have unemployment. Which is worse in most cases.

No. People should be paid by merit based on what they're worth, not by law. If the minimum wage is raised inflation will rise accordingly until the new wage is pointless. Minumum wage increases have always been passed on to the consumer, this time will be no different.

I should not be raised. The employer should have the decision as to what to pay the employee. If they are a terrible employee that can hardly work the cash register than employees should not be required to pay to same amount of money to them as a person that also just started out that is competent at working the register or some other position. If the employee doesn't like what the employer is willing to pay than they shouldn't work there and the employeer might go out of business bacause they are only offering rediculous wages or another person that wants that job will take it at the price that the employer is offering and work their way up from there.

I think they should cut taxes, instead of raising the minimum wage, that will put more money in your pocket, and prices on purchased good won't go up. Someone has to pay for it.

I agree....They give themselves raises every year, yet there hasn't been a min. wage increase for over a decade. I think the min. wage should be $7.50 right now and that is a number that hasn't even kept up with inflation...just a good start without breaking the small employer.
