Males - Leather jackets & white t-shirts (w/ slicked back hair & a cigarette behind the ear); Also, converse all-star tennis shoes or maybe black penny loafers; (This is the greaser look...the jock look is pretty dweeby & it would probably be hard to find chinos for a guy now a days.)
Females - Simple oxford with the poodle skirts or rolled up jeans or any full circle skirt that hits mid-calf & is made of a natural fiber, so it will hang correctly; white Keds or saddle shoes; hair in ponytail with a sheer or silk scarf tied around it; If it's chilly either wear an old letterman SWEATER (not a jacket) or the top sweater from a twin set with only the top button buttoned - it can be draped over shoulders instead of putting your arms in the sleeves; RED lipstick & very little other make-up;
The above info is according to my dad who graduated from HS in 1956.
Also, it is important to note that the time period that most people think of as the '50's is really the late '50's & early '60's.
Theme Ideas - jukeboxes, drive-in movies, coke floats, ice cream sodas, soda shop; Dance contests were popular;
The movies - Grease, Grease 2, Shag, the Movie, & Dirty Danciing are all set in that time period; Or watch movies from then like Gidget or Rebel Without a Cause; Also you can watch Happy Days on Nick at Nite - TV Land;
I hope this helps. The links below include some pictures.

Your average Poodle Skirt girl wouldn't have been caught dead with a greaser or a biker. Normal guys were pretty conservative when "I Like[d] Ike." Check some of the old movies on TCM for ideas. And you might check around town to see if anybody has a '57 Chevy--it's very popular as a collectors'/restoration item.
Ahhh! Carl Perkins and his Blue Suede Shoes! Elvis, Jerry Lee and the rest at Memphis' Sun Studio! Rock & Roll is here to stay.

Tennis shoes with socks, tight sweaters tucked into your poodle skirts, big patent leather belts, small scarfs tied around your neck, ponytails, rolled up jeans, school jackets. Just watch the movie "Grease" with John Travolta. Some themes are soda shops, juke boxes, records and record albums, diaries, spin the bottle, drag racing, pajama parties, scavenger hunts. There were the leather jacket groups, the socialites, the nerds, the athletes--just like any other school.

Watch the movie Grease. When I think of the 50's, thats what I see. I see greased back hair, white t-shirts rolled up at the sleeves with a pack of ciggs rolled under the sleeve, old model t cars, girls with poodles or phones on their skirts, glam glasses (cat eye frames), beehive hairdos, the tight skirts that went down to mid calf, cashmere sweaters, ribbons in ponytails, guys with their pants rolled up showing white socks in penny loafers...
i could go on... watch old school movies with stars like James Dean, Gretta Garbo, watch Peyton Place... better yet, just watch Turner Classic Movies.
