Has red always been Santa's colour? I have been told that this is the result of a 1919 Coke Cola add campaign. Is this true?

It may be more widely spread because of the coke ad but santa is in red because in the bible jesus is wearing a red robe one time and since christmas is a christian holiday that color was put on santa.

If you go to Google Images and search Father Christmas (the British Santa) he is usually shown wearing green instead.
