Red was supposed to represent blood, and the black was supposed to represent the soil of their native land (they were often referred to together as the 'Blut und Boden'). It doesn't hurt that the three colours were also the colours of the old German Confederation flag, either.
The swastika symbol was adopted because archaeologists had found it on artifacts from the ruins of Troy and other things in the region, and hypothesized that it was a mark specifically used by the Aryan race. In 1910, a German poet suggested it be used as the symbol of anti-Semitic organizations.

Origins of the Colours
After the North German League in 1867 (and after 1871, the new German Empire) was formed, the Prussian government's dislike for the black-red-gold flag resulted in the adoption of a new black-white-red tricolor. After the German defeat in World War One, the new republic adopted the black-red-gold tricolor earlier used in 1848 — and now again the German flag. As a result, the right wing parties urged the readoption of the black-white-red. The colors of the Nazi flag was thus a form of right wing allegiance and signified opposition to democracy. The original (1867) meaning was apparently a merger of the Prussian black-white and the red and white colors common among German maritime states (allegedly inspired by the medieval Hanseatic League).

It was designed personally by Hitler, but the swastika had been use by other similar organisations in post war Germany most notably the Friekorps and the Thule society.
Hitler came out with some mimbojumbo about what they where supposed to represent, but he was a deranged lunatic so you can't really read too much into this

They are very prominant colours. The Swastica is actually a Budhist symbol and has been around for thousands of years, those pesky nazi's turned it into a symbol of evil
