come on folks! how much does the government give them to play this role? i would be pissed honestly. Thank goodness Diana added a hint of beauty to the lineage, the royals are ugly. royal homes and castles would be tourist attractions with and without the royal famliy. thousands of folks come to see Mt. Vernon (George Washington's home) everyday.

Britian is steeped in tradition and history, which they can be proud of , and a monarchy is part of that history, so long live the Queen.

As an American who lived in Britain for several years, I used to ask the same question. I've come to understand that many people support the monarchy as an institution because they feel it gives them a strong sense of connectedness to their long, illustrious past. Also, I think they believe it sets them apart from other European countries that once were monarchies.

And it does bring the tourism dollars rolling in. I seriously doubt there would be nearly as many tourists interested in Britain's castles were it not for the royals. After all, there are castles all over Europe that once were inhabited by royal families, but how many people outside those countries can name any other than Versailles in Paris? Yet virtually everyone knows about Windor Castle and Buckingham Palace in Britain.

Personally, I understand the benefits of keeping the monarchy, but they come at the cost of preserving a class system because in addition to the queen, there are all those dukes, earls, lords, etc. holding lands and in many cases, still inheriting the right to sit in the House of Lords in Parliament and impact laws. That is imcompatable with the principle that the people should choose their government and it's at odds with a society that increasingly recognizes that each person sould be judged on their own individual accomplishments, rather than who their parents are.

But most Brits are still infatuated with their monarchy. I expect they'll have it for at least a generation or two more.

It's a hangover from the days when englishmen were slaves under the norman invaders Most of the monarchs of England have been of French or German descent, the present queen's husband is Greek which introduces yet another foreign streak into the royal family.
They have little connection with the indigenous english people and one day the nation may be politically mature enough to have the courage to elect a head of state as most other nations do.

the royals have been around for centuries and hopefully will be for centuries to come. Why would you dislike them so?? They are part of history, made history, changed history. The British, are proud of their heritage and tradition which was made and carried on by the royals. If not for them British tourism would drop off to nothing, the palaces, museums, the tower, were built by royals, therefore, keeping the economy going by toursits that want to visit them. Don't think that the queen just sits on her bum, read about her and her busy schedule, she what she has control she is not just sitting there on her throne. Also, looks has absolutely nothing to do with it--you could be a one eyed cyclops and still be groomed to be royalty which the queen started at a very young age, it was not bed of roses growing up being conditioned to possibly take the throne.

What was said about Great Britain at what time was that "the sun never sets in the British empire." The British were not only the most powerful, but the last of monarchies. Most were torn apart during the World Wars. Their parliament still consists of 1/2 Lords, royal blood. It's prestige.

The Royal Family help tourism. However this isn't an advantage because it means loud, obese Americans hefferlumping down our streets all summer. If that aint a good enough reason for a Republic I don't know what is.
