Most religions have fundamental concepts that require submission to a greater power, or at least to believe that a greater power than themselves exists. Based on gross generalizations about gender differences, you could make the following argument:
Men like to think they have all the answers and are their own source of power -- that to have faith in a power greater than themselves is somehow emasculating. Being a religious follower can be very threatening to this type of man. The flip side to this is that most religious leaders are men -- they simply channel that thirst for power into becoming top dog in their congregation or entire area of faith. Pat Robertson comes to mind.
Women are more open to ideas, and have an easier time with the fundamental framework. NOTE: I do NOT mean women are essentially submissive, only that women are not so hung up on having all the power all the time. Also, the parts of religion that talk about caring for others, treating each other with consideration, come easier to women than men.

a little bit. I attribute that to females being told to conform and listen to others from a young age
