Developed as in is it like a new world or third world country? Well for starters, it's as modern as the United States if not more and it's as old fashioned as ancient China with lots of history. It's a melting pot of periodic Time lines. Major cities like Tokyo, Yokohama, and Osaka rival those of NYC and LA. Countrysides like Kurihama, Hokkaido, and Okinawa are beautiful and serene like colonial Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Japan just may be the MOST developed country in the world. Take a look at Japan in Google Earth and look at the HUGE gray zones that include and surround (and almost link) Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, and other cities.

There is not much political pressure from environmentalists here, and large-scale construction corporations have politicians in their pockets for a constant stream of development projects. Almost every river in Japan has a damn. There's a very extensive train network. Some of the longest brideges in the world, and even an undersea tunnel to Hokkaido which is LONGER than the Chunnel, yet you've probably never heard of it.

Maybe the most outstanding sign of development is the artificial islands. Land in Japan is so expensive it is actually cheaper to level a small mountain and use the rocks to build an island offshore, which can be several square kilometers in size. Again, check out Google Earth or any map, and check out all the squares of artificial land slowly filling in Tokyo Bay, Osaka Bay, the new Kansai and Kobe Airports are built on huge artifical islands a few kilometers out to sea.

However, in rural areas, and poor areas in city suburbs, there are still a few people (usually the elderly) who live in not much more than shacks made of wood, mud and tin roofing, that were likely built in the immedaite post-WWII days, and kept as homes to avoid paying rent in a modern place. These seem to be disppearing as the owners... well, die off.

I think that Japan is able to put on a face of being developed but I think they are still quite behind a lot of other countries.

I think that is what causes a lot of frustrations when people come to live here. They see the outside surfaces of Japan's development while experiencing it's antiquated thoughts, primal urges (look at the naked 13 year old girls used to sell everything here) and housing that would be expected in much less "developed" countries.

Not meaning to sound so negative about it, after all I've been living here for over 5 years so it's not that bad.

I spent about 4 months in Nagoya, and I was very impressed with the state of development there. If what is true for Nagoya also applies to other places in Japan, then one must say that Japan is more highly developed than many European countries. The public transport system is efficient and reliable, the streets are clean, and everybody obeys the traffic rules. I would say that this shows a high level of development.

Japan has the best of both the modern and primitive world. On the modern side, you can find every electronic gadget, and most advanced electronic gadgets anywhere in the cities. Then, you can travel just an hour or less outside the city limits and you have the rice paddies and very basic one room homes with animals wandering in and out of the houses, etc. It is so rich culturally, everyone should come and visit.

So far the countries I used to visit, Japan is the most develop country. I stay in Japan for one month. I live in Fukuoka, Japan. The highway in Fukuoka wasn't on the land, it was on the sky. Japan is a high tech country. Unlike other countries, they used sensor almost for everything. In the cities, they park their car underground using the computer. The pollute smoke inside the shop will be suck into underground. Their subway looks like a shopping center. They use global positioning system in their car too.
There is also bullet train in Japan, the fastest train in the world.
