Above answerer is wrong. In one of the first episodes, the gang states that his new name is Fez because they cannot pronounce his real name.

Yes, both answers are right. It does mean foreign exchange student abd it was because people couldn't pronounce the student's name. It still happens now which I don't like. I think it would be very respectful to call foreign exchange students by their real names not just what is easy for us. That is what cultural exchange is supposed to be. An American student wouldn't like to be American High School Student (AHSS) Sounds like this appeals to you because of your curiousity. Yes, exactly. But that is his actual name, not just a name the gang gave to him because of that. The producers decided on that name for his character because of the FES.
