Ex. 3x^2 + 6x + y^2 - 1 = (3x^2 + 6x) + (y^2 - 1)
= 3x(x + 2) + (y - 1)(y + 1)
[Note: (y^2 - 1) is a difference of squares]

Factoring by grouping is the process of dividing an equation whose terms have no common GCF into parts to make it factorable.
Example:
2a+18b+5a+45b
(2a+18b)+(5a²+45ab)
2(a+9b)+5a(a+9b)=
(2+5a)(a+9b)

Sorry, I'm not terribly good at explaining this. Here's a link. It's toward the bottom of the page.
