I totally don't understand this problem, so if you guys could explain it to me that would really help.
Here it is:
"For short distances on land, an aligator can run on it's toes at a speed of 30 miles per hour. How many feet per second is this?"

1 mile is 5280 ft

so 30 miles/hr = 30x5280ft/hr x(1hr/60min)x(1min/60sec)
= 44 ft/sec

How many feet in 30 miles?

It's 30*5280 (Yes, we used to use miles and feet when I was a boy!)

If the alligator could run 158400 feet in an hour (i.e. in 60*60 seconds), how many feet in 1 second?

158400/3600 = 44

so the speed is 44 feet per second.
In civilised units, that's 13.4 metre per second.

30 miles/hour = 30 miles/hour x 1 hour/60 min. x 1 min./ 60 sec.

x 5280 feet/ 1 mile = (30 x 5280) feet / (60 x 60) sec.

= 44 feet / sec. (44 feet per second)

5280 ft. = one mile
how many seconds are in an hour? 60 min * 60 sec in a min, so 3600.

30 mi/hr * 5280 ft/mi * 1hr/3600 sec

when you set this up, the hr and mi cancel out, so you're left with ft/sec...

Correct answer would be 44 Feet Per Second

30 miles/1 hr * (5280 ft/ 1 mile) * (1 hr / 3600 s) = 44 ft/s
There is 5280 ft in 1 mile and 3600 s in one hr. the hours and miles cancel out and you are left with feet per second.

miles/hour*5280 feet/mile*1/3600 hours/sec gives:
5280/3600 = 1.4666666.
So 30 miles per hour =1.46666666*30 = 44 feet per second

(30 miles/hour) * (5280 feet/mile) * (hour/3600 seconds) = your answer

If you approach these problems on a units basis, you will quickly find the solutions.

Well there are 5280 ft in one mile and 3600 sec. in one hour.

mi/hr * 5280 ft/ 1 mi * 1 hr/ 3600 sec. = ft/sec
