My wife is pregnant and suffering from nausea. She been wanting soda and friends have said ginger ale or 7up should help. But here is the problem. she is hypoglycemic which means she has to stay away from sugar and we both have heard really bad things about Aspartame and Splenda the main sugar substitutes in sodas. Is there anything that doesn’t have these chemicals and is not loaded with sugar or caffeine?

I would give her regular gingerale. The reason why gingerale is good for nausea is because of the ginger root. You could just go to a natural food store or vitamin store and get the ginger and give it to her that way. If she was my wife I would do that or I would give her regular gingerale without the diet. She won't need to drink that much to have it help her. She just need to have half a glass of the ginger ale and some saltine crackers in the morning right next to her bed before she even gets out of it. Tell her when she wakes up to have four crackers and half a glass of the ale and it will help a great deal and won't jeapardize her hypoglycemia.

It is a (sadly widely believed) URBAN LEGEND that Aspartame is not safe.

According to the FDA and an MIT study - Aspartame is SAFE for people to use (including pregnant women) unless you have phenylketonuria - in which case you cannot metabolize the substance phenylalnine.

"Aspartame is made up of two amino acids: aspartic acid and phenylalanine. Amino acids make up proteins. Don't be confused, though -- aspartame is not a protein. The chemical configuration of aspartame is different from that of a protein. When aspartame is digested, it is broken down into aspartic acid, phenyalanine and methanol, substances that can actually be found in "natural" foods. For example, the same substances can be found in milk, fruits and vegetables. Actually, many of these "natural" foods have higher amounts of aspartic acid, phenylalanine and methanol because aspartame is used in such small quantities. Some of the breakdown products may cross the placenta, but studies show that the amount is insignificant, and therefore, determined to be safe."

Yes, there is! It is called Emer'gen-C. It is taken sometimes as a vitimin suppliment, but it is powder that you put in water. It 'fizzes.' There are certain kinds that are better than others and have more fiz. It helped me so much when I was so sick with morning sickness...and it gave me vitamins as well that I couldn't take otherwise, 'cause I would just have them come back up again. The Lemon-Lime and Tangerine are the best! You can buy them at wal-mart in packages of 36. They are usually around 8 dollars. My doctor/midwife actually prescribed them to me. They are also good at helping with energy, because they are packed with B vitamins. B6 for nausea and B12 for energy. The only thing it is low on is folic acid...so make sure she is getting folic acid as well, if she isn't taking a pre-natal. Everything is natural in these and is absorbed into the bloodstream, so no nutrients are lost and nothing is synthetic. By the way, I too am hypoglycemic, and these have been the best solution for me! Good Luck, and I wish you and your wife the best!

Try just club soda or tonic water maybe mixed with some juice.

Also Perrier with lemon or lime can be quite nice (or the store brand of the same)

I do not believe that any artificial sweeteners are safe during pregnancy. I have heard very bad things about all of them.

Also just make some ginger tea from fresh ginger. There are also ginger pills you can buy if she isn't fond of the taste of ginger tea.

You could try flavored mineral water. It's only lightly flavored so it doesn't have any sugar or sweetener, but it still is carbonated which can help with the nausea. Hansen's natural soda also has less sugar that regular sodas if she can have some sugar.

Go to a natural store in your area. They have all sorts of natural drinks/pops...without the bag sugars and chemicals. Look for something with cane juice instead of sugar as a way of sweetening it. Or, buy a club soda and add it to her favorite type of juice.

I think if anything that splends would be better as it is made from real sugar. I think anything in moderation would be fine. I drank diet coke like crazy! Also try to make sure she's getting enough water. Does she like herbal teas? That would be great to sip on, but I know when I was preganat I couldn't drink anything hot it always had to be ice cold.

I concur with the fruit juice and soda water advice.

Check the 'baking' section of your supermarket for flavouring extracts if fruit juice is still too sugary; if it's not, you might try a small amount of some sort of cordial in the soda water -- Ribena or Rose's Lime; that sort of thing.

Mix one part fruit juice to 2 or 3 parts seltzer water. It gets her the hydration she needs without the sugar or aspartame, and it soothes the stomach. It got me through morning sickness.
Good luck to you both. Morning sickness is the worst.
