If you have a wireless router you don't need a cable. The only time you need a cable or at least plugged in is during the initial setup to set up your wireless password.

The modem that comes with your service provider should plug into your wireless router. You'll need to connect them with a cat5 cable. Then plug your computer into the wireless router (for first time installer only) to setup your configuration.
