Why did printers in the past wear bands on their sleeves on the upper arms?

To protect them and their clothing from the chemicals and inks as well as getting caught in the machinery.

To keep there sleeves out of the ink

so when they reached over the machines there sleeves didn't get caught and so they wouldn't smudge the ink
