I am in Washington state you are thinking of a Madrona, always shedding a red, thin Bark

Definitely a River Birch! Look at leaves (or what is on ground around it now) and if they look like christmas trees it is a river birch. Very rough bark and thicker peelings. Very whitish bark.

If it has (had) really large leaves it could be an american sycamore. (the peeling bark would be very thin and underlying bark would be a greenish color)

I agree with the person who said it is an Arbutus tree. It will seasonally shed its bark. very messy but beautiful trees. You see them everywhere on Vancouver Island and along the SW coast in British Columbia, Canada.

Sounds like our Madrona tree. Coppery colored bark and beautiful to view as the summer sun is setting.
