Most small companies, less than 25 employees, do not actually run background checks. They might call your job references, but not actually run credit checks or criminal background checks either.

But, keep in mind, that if the company ever finds out you lied on your application, they can fire you in a heartbeat. How well can you keep a secret from your co-workers?

Plus, I have been known to go back and do the checks after we hire someone and then find out they are not working out. That is just an old HR tactic to keep from paying unemployment.

Good luck.

Hi, where in the world are you? Im in the UK and they don't really check your police record unless you apply for a skilled job like a nurse or something or if you want to work with children etc. Here in the UK an employer cannot check your police record without you filling in a special form which allows them to do so. So in actual fact you could state on your main application form that you do not have a criminal record and get away with it unless they do the official checks (which you would know if they have or haven't as you would have signed the consent) Hope that makes sense to you and good luck! x

You could try working from home. If you have a good typing speed, general and legal transcription jobs from companies like Mountain West, Tigerfish and Accutran are available. Some of these companies do not require any experience. You can apply directly from their websites which are listed at http://www.pcworkathome.net/transcriptionjob.html

You really can't. It's vary rare if they don't check into it. My sister has a background like that, and it's taken her a looong time to prove herself to companies. She works for a good company now, but has had to provide references from smaller companies where she could do that much to show what KIND of employee she is etc..
