With technology it is virtually impossible to tell a good counterfeit from the real thing.

Call the bank on the check (the name, city/state and phone should be there) or call directory assistance and ask for the bank.

Call them and ask for funds availability. They will tell you if such an account exists and if there is enough money right this second to cash it. Also ask them how long the account has been open and in good standing.

There is still no guarantee that between the time you cash it, or deposit it, that the funds will still be there. If the suspected check clears initially, I would wait a couple weeks to make sure it doesn't bounce later on.

And remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

The watermark & photocopy prevention measures. Try making a photocopy of it...Most of the time, it won't photocopy correctly, and that is gonna show you what's what.
