THousand of people have dissappeared in that area throughout recorded history. Ships and planes dissappearing wihtout a trace and no wreakage ever found. People who have passed throught there without dissappearing have reported seeing strange things as well.
I think that compasses don't work in the area due to strong magnetic fields as well, but I am not sure...It's been about 16 years since I have read anything on it.

Because there have been a lot of mysterious disappearances in that area and no one has ever been able to come up with an explanation.
