I just downloaded a film from the internet but I do not know how to put the subtitles in. There are some sort of files attached to it (called STR, which I believe are the subtitles) but they would not open when playing the film. Do I have to do this manually, and if so, how?

SRT files are subtitle files. There's two things you can do with them. The first, which is what the first two misinformed posters hinted at was to hard sub them. That is you take the video and put the subtitles directly on the video. That works...sure.

But you probably just want a soft sub. That is, you have a media player automatically display the subtitles. Obviously, the media player has to support them. There are two good media players with such support. Look at VLC (http://www.videolan.org/ ) and Media Player Classic (http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/ ).

The only way to attach a .srt file to an .avi file is to convert the avi file to .vob (dvd format) and attach the .srt files using whatever program you wish to convert it with.
It can't be done without converting I'm afraid.

The files need to have the same name and your media player will pick it up automatically.

Eg. file.avi & file.str
