When our daughter got to be too long for her infant seat at five months, we bought a Graco ComfortSport. It's a convertible car seat, so until she was old enough to face forward she was able to face backward easily. Since we've had it, we've taken a few multi-hour trips, to of them being 8-9 hours each way. The baby was riding easy the entire way. It's not too expensive, either (less than $90 on sale).
I think it was a great buy for us, but I would recommend taking your son into a few stores and actually seeing how he fits in the seats before you buy anything.
Good luck!

One great place to look is www.albeebaby.com They are usually way cheaper than any store for large items, and they don't charge shipping.: I recently purchased an Eddie Bauer 3-In-1 Convertable seat (aka: Cosco Alpha Omega Elite) for $109 (was around $160 at Babies R Us) & there were no shipping charges.

Did you know that you can get one from the fire department for free?? That is if you need help! :} What I got for my daughter was a Graco car seat that works for rear facing and forward facing. They have weight limitations for both. I would check out wal-mart.com or babies-r-us.com. Good luck :}

well not knowing what affordable is, the best car seat on the market is Britax...while they run approx 300.00 they are well worth the investment. (They are tested at higher standards then American brands) You can get at Babies R Us in the United states and you can find them on line. You will also not need to replace anytime soon as most of their line takes children to 65 lbs or more. Good Luck

A previuos poster mentioned getting them from a Fire Department. I think even Police/State Partrol Offices have them. We got one free from a county health service a month ago so you could check there too. They ask for a donation but it's not required. They may even help you install it. If you don't want to do this then look for a Graco. I think they have a pretty reputable name.

Any mid-sized carseat will work. You can put almost any carseat rear-facing except for booster seats. Just pick one out and install it backwards instead of forward-facing.
