Before you begin choosing your internet connection you must first find out what you have available to you. There are 4 major types of connections. Dial-Up (Regular Analog), DSL, Cable Modem, and finally Satellite Internet Services. Each of the 3 highspeed internet connections have their own advantage/disadvantage's.
Dial-Up is the most commonly available but will not work simply because it is so slow and will leave your system with a lag.
DSL, or Digital Subscriber Line, is a high-speed Internet connection from your telephone company. DSL uses your existing phone lines and allows you to use your phone in the normal manner even if you are on line. Rates are typically $30 to 50 month (though some are now less). Bandwidths usually range from 128k (medium speed) to 768k (high-speed).The great advantage of DSL is that it is just you on the connection. Which allows for consistant, high-speed usage every time unlike the other forms of internet. Another advantage is that you are allowed to be on 24/7 with no problems. The disadvantage (so far) is the lack of availability. As time goes on, more and more places are offering DSL. But for the moment, there are a number of places that are not yet connected to DSL.
Next is Cable Modem. Cable Modem are basically the same as DSL, except they use your TV Coaxil cable instead of your phone lines. The biggest disadvantage with Cable Modem's are that they are shared between users which can lead to slow connections during the weekends and business hours.
The final option you have is Satellite Internet. Satellite Internet is basically a turbo-charged dial up, which means it is better than standard dial-up, but not even close to being as efficient as DSL or Cable Modems.
So the answer to your question is DSL if it is available, and secondly Cable Modems. You can talk to your TV, Cable, Satellite, or Phone Company to find out which ones are offered for your area.
Also, WiFi internet is available on PS3 60GB Version which will allow you to use wireless internet so you don't have to run cables all over your home if you choose DSL. All of the other game systems will require you to plug a cord into the back.
Good Luck and Happy Gaming!!!

You need at least DSL or another kind of high speed internet. 56k won't do.
