As far as I can tell, no relation really. Diwali is related to Lakshmi and new year.

DIWALI - the "festival of lights" or Dipavali in Sanskrit and it's the goddess Lakshmi who's called upon to for prosperity. It's supposed to be the day Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after returning from a 14 yr exile. I've never hear Ganesha being associated unless someone's mixing him on purpose, but he has his own holiday called Ganesha Chaturthi. Ganesha is the god of wisdom and "Lord of Obstacles"... as in getting rid of 'em.

Diwali is a five day Hindu festival which occurs on the fifteenth day of Kartika. Diwali means "rows of lighted lamps" and the celebration is often referred to as the Festival of Lights. During this time, homes are thoroughly cleaned and windows are opened to welcome Laksmi, goddess of wealth. Candles and lamps are lit as a greeting to Laksmi. Gifts are exchanged and festive meals are prepared during Diwali. The celebration means as much to Hindus as Christmas does to Christians.

and Ganesha is the Lord of success and destroyer of evils and obstacles. He is also worshipped as the god of education, knowledge, wisdom and wealth. But, there is also a:

Ganesh Chaturthi Festival.
On the day of the festival, it is placed on raised platforms in homes or in elaborately decorated outdoor tents for people to view and pay their homage. The priest, usually clad in red silk dhoti and shawl, then invokes life into the idol amidst the chanting of mantras. This ritual is the pranapratishhtha. After this the shhodashopachara (16 ways of paying tribute) follows. Coconut, jaggery, 21 modakas (rice flour preparation), 21 durva (trefoil) blades and red flowers are offered. The idol is anointed with red unguent (rakta chandan). Throughout the ceremony, Vedic hymns from the Rig Veda and Ganapati Atharva Shirsha Upanishad, and Ganesha stotra from the Narada Purana are chanted.

For 10 days, from Bhadrapad Shudh Chaturthi to the Ananta Chaturdashi, Ganesha is worshipped.

So, the only relation I see is that both are festivals.

None really. He being the destroyer of obstructions has maintained his place as the 1st receiver of Prayers. Otherwise it is a totally Lakshmi dominated festival.

From what I understand was that Ganesha would sell Dawili (also known as "Da' Willie")...her food stamps...and then use the money she made to buy crack cocaine.

Dat Ganesha....she be a troubled girl...her and her sister Yolanda.
