you can still form a relationship, but it would have to be nonverbal (which i would be fine at because i dont like talking as much!). you can put an object in their hand, such as a blanket or an apple if you want to tell them something to do with that. they can still FEEL things, and that is what communication must be based on. the feel of things. people have five senses, not just hearing and sight. use them all to your advantage.

Learn sign language, how to read and write brail, also learn how to have patience for iliterate people.

Through love. they may not be able to hear, see, or sign and read braille( I assume that is what you mean by illiterate). but everyone knows the language of love.

You could give 'em a hug. Or feed them. Or hit them. Or have sex with them.
But that's not really communication. Well, those persons are pretty much plants, so they aren't capable of doing much else than converting oxygen into carbondioxide or food into poop.

I worked with disabled children
Smile
listen to what they are saying even if you don't understand
be gentle while speaking to them . not loud
watch their lips if they can talk . you can recognize some words
be gentle and understanding
