Hi there. "Amistad" is a good one, but "The Colour Purple" is nothing to do with slavery (being set 50 years after it ended!). You could try the Michael Caine film "Ashanti", or even "Spartacus" for the Roman view. All of these films are available, as is the TV miniseries of "Roots". For an unsual view on the subject, try "Dogville" by Lars Von Trier.
Cheers, Steve.

Yes, here are some, but I'm not sure how easy they will be to find:

http://www.sankofa.nl/Default.aspx?tabid=53

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098769/

The best of these are of course Roots, Armistad, The Color Purple, Middle Passage, and Sankofa but there are some personal accounts and documentaries of interivews with freed slaves which are very moving. Among the best treatments of this theme is Ken Burns' wonderful series, "The Civil War." What a sad chapter in history!

Amistad (slave revolt)
Glory (ex-slaves become soldiers)
Beloved (aftermath of slavery)
Roots (origins of slavery)
The Last Supper (Cuban slave revolt)
and any number of older films set in the South, such as Jezebel and Gone With the Wind.
