It is just another extension, anybody can use it, doesn't have to mean anything special.

Most of the Web suffixes don't have restrictions on use, two exceptions that I know of is .gov and .edu

It's not an extension because it's not part of a filename. Domain names are hierarchical, the highest level being the last, like .info or .com.

info is hardly ever used but it should indicate that the site is for information as opposed to commerce (.com) or a Canadian site (.ca) etc. These rules are not strictly enforced.
