There is a Federal minimum, which is mandatory, but many states dictate MW higher than the Federal.
This should answer any questions you have:

Yes, 28 or 32 States have higher minimum wages than the federal Governments stated low wage. This whole argument by Bush and the Republicans shows where they place their loyalties and concerns. It is amazing that they can get away with even saying in public they appose this raise in minimum wage to 7.25 per hour.
CEO's or big wigs make like 150 times that low wage just for being greedy.
The rich group also works hard to lower regulations that are the only thing that stands between poverty and an early death for the poor.
According to the republicans, they can not afford to pay for health care for their employees. And that is only the beginning.
It is time to take the public rights back from the greedy individuals at, and near, the top of the economic pile because the rich do not deserve to own the ground, air, water and sky and the power, minerals and oil that comes out it, exclusively.
The rich are getting richer as we talk, but the poor are getting poorer all the time. It is time to distribute the wealth more evenly.

Yes - federal minimum wage is currently $5.15 per hour, and is proposed to go up to at least $7 an hour. But, different states also have their own minimum wages. The coastal states tend to be higher than the midwest/plains states and the south. In fact, until just a few years ago, the minimum wage in Wyoming was only $1.63 an hour.....

Anyway, only those businesses that are subject to federal law have to pay the federal minimum wage (you can get more information on what kinds of businesses these are by looking at Section 3 of the Fair Labor Standards Act or by calling 1-866-4US-WAGE, or going to www.dol.gov). If the business is not subject to federal law, then it has to pay the state wage of state in which it is doing business. If both the federal and the state minimum wages apply to the employer, then it has to pay whichever is highest.

Hope this helps!

In the USA the fed sets the min. wage. States have the right to increase above that wage, as per their own autonomy. However, states cannot be below that wage. NY is at a higher minimum wage level because it is more enslaved to the union power brokers than say Oklahoma.

The Federal minimum wage is $5 but each state can raise it if they wish. NY is one of the states that has a higher minimum wage than Federal standards.

I live in the mid-west and there are no jobs here that start at minimum wage. If you offer $7.00 and hour to start, you will not get any applicants that can pass a drug test.

Sure, raise it to $7.00 that way the employers that use illegal workers cannot claim that they did not know they were illegal when they are paying under minimum wage.

Human dignity dictates that we pay at least $7.00 and hour anyway.

$20.00 and hour adds up to $40,000 a year, if you both work and have a family income of $80,000 you are not going to starve anywhere in the US.

You will live VERY will on 80K in the Midwest.

Peace!

There is a federal minimum wage, but the individual states can set higher minimum wages. I believe 30 states have higher minimum wages than the federal govt. min.
